John finishes P2 at Miller, second to Simona de Silvestro. John got by Summmerton and Vervich on the start (quoting John: "we were four wide going into turn one, Niemla, Vervich, me and Summerton. I had nowhere to go in the middle, locked tires with Summerton and he was pushing me toward Vervich but there was no room. It was crazy. Niemela dropped tires and it cleared out from there - can't wait to see the video") John simply drove his race from there on. Simona was the class of the field today. There was simply no catching the Team Stargate entry who won by a nearly 10 second margin. Details to follow. (submitted by Michael Edwards).

Qualifying left something to be desired. John qualifies P4 behind Simona, Vervich, and Summerton. Clearly he and the team are of the opinion that they should have put it together better than P4, but races have been won from further back. Miller Motorsports Park is not a great place to pass, so the start will be important. We will keep you posted.
Day 2 Practice and John is P2. “It was a good session, but we’re still a little under four tenths (of a second) off,” said John. “I’ve got to keep the big picture in mind for the championship. We’ve always said we’re aiming for the top three every race. That’s what wins championships, so I’ve got that in mind. At the same time, I want the glory. I want pole tomorrow and to win the race on Sunday. We’ll go back and work on it, but it’s going to be tough. They’ve been dominating every practice session here. It’s going to be tough to beat Simona tomorrow, but we’ve been taking bites out of it. We’ll see if we can get it done tomorrow.”

The Thursday practice session showed that we have some opportunity for improvement. John finished the day P4. Three drivers were clustered at about John's time, but one driver was 0.6 sec quicker. John felt that the car was actually performing quite well, and some detailed analysis was in order to sort out the optimal performance. The team has confidence this can be done today in the final two practice sessions before qualifying. Stay tuned.

Newman Wachs Racing drivers John Edwards and Markus Niemela are both winners at Miller Motorsports Park. John dominated his Star Mazda race in 2008 and Markus won his Atlantic Championship race, both leading flag to flag. “With John leading the championship after his stellar performance in Sebring, we’d obviously like to hold on to that lead," explained Eddie Wachs. "Fortunately for Markus, the series will allow one race to be dropped, so he is very much still in the fight as well. Both of these drivers are capable of winning on any given weekend. It is important for NWR and our sponsors that we perform well and I have no doubt in my mind that we can deliver.”
Said John, “I'm excited to be going back to Miller, after winning last year's Star Mazda race there. It's a very cool track with a lot of fast corners and small elevation changes at just the right time. Although it is nothing like Sebring, we've been doing some testing on tracks similar to what we'll see at Miller, so I'm confident that we'll have a setup that's comfortable to me.”
